Ethernet card

Howdy ! Y'all have always been so helpful with my questions !

I know this is not the correct newsgroup to asky my question but perhaps one
of you know where I can ask this .

My rural area finally has DSL ( Embarq) and I received the modem today .
Directions to connect seem easy but .... it says to connect to the ethernet
port on the back of my Dell Diension 4300s . There are two phone jacks on the
back of the pc . How do I know if my pc has an ethernet card ? I have an
Intel Modem Chipset 536 EP ( internal) V.92 and V.90.

The directions say that I can also connect with a USB port connecter.

Any ideas where to find out if my pc has an ethernet port ? Dell support is
no longer available free to me since I bought my pc in 2002.

Thanks :)

If your PC has a network adapter then you would have a socket
at the back of your PC that looks like your phone jacks, just a
little wider, having 8 pins inside.

You could also look at the Control Panel / System / Hardware /
Device Manager. Does it show a network adapter?

If you don't have one then you can buy a PCI network adapter
for very little money. Just ask your computer shop. Chances are
that it will work straight away after you've plugged it in.

Modems use RJ-11 plugs and NICs/Ethernet use RJ-45 plugs which are larger than
RJ-11.
The directions say that I can also connect with a USB port connecter.

Right click MyComputer.
Click Properties > Hardware tab > Device Manager button.
Expand Network Adapters if it's present to see what you have, otherwise you only have
a modem and you can either connect via USB or purchase a NIC (Newtork Interface
Card).

Dang ! Y'all are good ! Thank you so much !

I looked on the back of my pc and it only has two regular sized jacks not
the fat one that would match the modem connector cord so I'll trundle off to
my friendly comuter store and buy what I need . Can't wait to watch youtube :)

Thanks again !!!

Simple English:

Ethernet port: look for a "fat telephone jack".

If it don't have one, buy a PCI ethernet card. They are $10 these days.

Use ethernet for networking. USB for networking is a kludge.

The cable jack is slighter larger than a regular phone jack. You couldn't
put the cable in the wrong one. From what you said below (V92/V90) you have
a phone jack, not an Ethernet card. You may have to buy a card.

Thanks :) I figure since my pc is ready that Embarq will have a major glitch
or three or I can't figure out how to hook up the modem with phone line :)
