Ethernet Card Issue

O

OREALLY

The Ethernet Card on my HP a1430n is no longer functional. It's been
verified. HP is sending someone to replace the Card and / or the
Motherboard. The card appears to be embedded on the Motherboard. I have a
few of questions:

1) Is it possible to replace just the Card on the Motherboard?

2) If the Motheboard is replaced.......will I have to reinstall any
programs?...such as my Creative Sound Card, or any others?

3) What are the chances that the new Motherboard (assuming it is the exact
same model that came with the computer) will mess up the system and force a
clean reinstall?

I will Appreciate any information.

Thanks,

Oreally

Since someone is coming to do the swap for you, it should go smoothly
and not leave you with problems. Worst case it might require a Repair
Install if the chip set is different or something, but that's something
the tech should take care of. It shouldn't have any impact on your hard
drive/s at all, but those can be famous last words, so be sure to do a
backup before he arrives. That should be standard procedure for you,
actually.
Ask him to check the activation status for you before he leaves too,
just in case it was retriggered.

The easiest solution would be to disable the motherboard built-in
ethernet controller in the bios. Then install a pci ethernet card . (A
used Intel one maybe $10). No issues with driver for Intel network card
or 3Com one. No blue screen either since the motherboard was not changed.

If the HP technician want to change the motherboard, make sure he
replaced it with exactly the same chipset set.

One thing that might notice, and complain about the change, is Windows
XP itself. It is usually licensed to the PC it is running on, and the
motherboard contains the serial number. On the IBM systems that I've
used, you can record the serial number before the change, and then set
it back in the BIOS after the change. You can even change the model
number of your system, but strangely, upgrading to a faster model number
doesn't make it run any faster. :)

I also wonder about any DRM protected songs that you may have. They need
to know which system they are on...
