Eternal hourglass

All I get when I try to start Internet Explorer is the browser with a blank
screen and an hourglass. I cannot even use the menu to look for help or to
verify which version of Internet Explorer I have, but I am pretty sure it is
6.0. If I did not have Mozilla Firefox as a backup, I would not even be able
to get on this site to ask for help. I tried to download an update, but you
need a functioning Internet Explorer 5.0 or 5.5 or later to download updates
from Microsoft, which of course was the problem to begin with. Since certain
sites only work with Internet Explorer, I can't use Firefox for everything.
Task Manager tells me the Internet Explorer is running rather than not
responding, but that is obviously not true. What can I do to get past the
hourglass and get Internet Explorer to work?

Hi Sandra :)

You don't mention the version of Windows you are using, but, in addition to
Donny's suggestion, try the following and see if it helps:

Check IE>Tools>Internet Options>Connections tab
Click on LAN settings
Under Proxy server: Be sure "Use a proxy server for your LAN" is unchecked.
This can sometimes prevent IE from displaying web content

Blank - Empty - White Pages
Go to Tools>Internet Options>Security>Custom Levels> Check to Enable "Allow
META Refresh."

If still no joy....

Go to Start>Run> and register the following dll's by using
regsvr32 command. Try the first 2, then see if it resolves the problem. If
not then register the rest of the .dll's:

Enter each command one at a time and hit enter after each one. You should
see a message box that say it has been registered successfully.

regsvr32 urlmon.dll
regsvr32 actxprxy.dll
regsvr32 scrrun.dll
regsvr32 msxml.dll
regsvr32 mshtml.dll
regsvr32 shdocvw.dll
regsvr32 browseui.dll
regsvr32 msjava.dll

If you get a blank page:
http://www.fjsmjs.com/OE/nolinks.htm
IE6 opens blank or empty windows
http://inetexplorer.mvps.org/archive/answers2.htm#blank_windows

Windows Udate site comes up blank

Re-register the Urlmon.dll file
Click Start, click Run, type regsvr32 urlmon.dll in the Open box, and then
click OK and/or check your Internet Explorer Security Settings:-
1. Start Internet Explorer.
2. On the Tools menu, click Internet Options.
3. Click the Security tab.
4. Click the Internet Web content zone icon.
5. Click Custom Level.
6. In the Reset to box, click Medium.
7. Click Reset.
8. Click OK.

Hope this helps.
