error when updating from Win ME to WinXP Home

I have NAV 2003 Pro installed. Since the WinXP update
connects to the internet, I let Norton AntiVirus run.

1st prob is when update tries to connect to MS website to
get latest updates, I get msg saying MS site is not
available at this time.

So I ask it to skip this & continue with update. After
over an hours work, I get this DOS message in a box that
says "NAV Auto-Protect"

"Virus-like activity: The application C:\Windows\WinnT32
\WinnT32.exe is attempting write to the boot record of
drive C:

What would you like to do?
[stop] [continue] [exclude]"

but the arrows don't work on the keyboard. After pressing
a number of keys, including ESC, I get back to install
wizard and it says it's de-installing and to resume after
de-activating my virus protection software.

Is this what I should do, and not allow access to the
internet for latest updates?

Thanks

This appears to be the W32/Magistr.a@MM virus or a variant. Boot your
computer in Safe Mode, and rescan your system. Make sure your AV software
is up to date.
