error when doing fresh XP home install

I am trying to do a fresh install of a newly purchased XP home SP2, on a
blank formatted HD. I get the message "INF file txtsetup.sif is corrupt or
missing, status 32768. Setup cannot continue. Press any key to exit" Any
ideas on what I can do?

The HD was supplied formatted, or you formatted with a third party utility?

Such errors usually mean a hardware or memory problem or damaged cd

The error can be caused by several different things. By and large the
most common cause of the error is a smudged, dirty scratched or
defective CD. Even brand new cd's can sometimes be defective. Make
sure that there are no smudges on the cd.

A second common cause is a defective CD-ROM drive, if you have a spare
drive you could try it and see if it corrects the problem. Another
possible cause is bad or mismatched RAM. To eliminate hardware problems
run diagnostic tests on the machine, it would be recommended to run
memory (RAM) tests to make sure it isn't defective. While the article
here: http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=310064 addresses a slightly
different setup scenario, the listed causes could also apply in your case.

One way around the problem might be to install XP from a flat folder.
See these articles for instructions on how it's done. Ignore the
article titles, the procedure described is what you have to do to
install from a flat folder.

Note that you will have an installation on a FAT32 drive after you
install from a flat as described above, the file system can (and
probably should) be converted to NTFS after the installation is done.
