error upon start up - file missing

when i turn on the computer (windows XP operating system) a message wass displayed saying that file
windows\system32\config\system is missing.
i could not run windows so i was forced to use my backup/recovery cd and re-install XP

Now, XP is installed twice on my system. Upon start up you choose which version to run. one version (the onld one) does not run and displays the same message. The new version works fine but all my files and internet settings are in the old version

i would really appreciate some help in correcting this problem and reverting back to my onld operating system

Hi tom,

To fix the "windows\system32\config\system file is mising or corrupt"
where Xp wont boot:

Go to Recovery Console, change directories until you get to the drive
where the defetive XP is, and type:

cd system32\config
ren system system.old
ren system.alt systemalt.old
copy c:\windows\repair\system
copy c:\windows\repair\regback\system

(Assuming C: is the drive where the Windows XP you want to repair is
located)

Good luck
