Error trying to use GPRW on client

Matthew Clark

I am trying to use the Group Policy Results Wizard on at least 3
clients, and all of them fail. 1 failed with an "RPC Server is
unavailable". The other 2 fail with a "The requested name is valid, but
no data of the requested type was found". This is a brand new domain,
so there are only 3 computers in AD right now. Does anyone know why I
cannot seem to view the policies on the machine?

Thanks,

Matthew

Could be a couple of reasons. First off, you can only do GP Results against
XP or Server 2003 machines--it not supported in Win2K. The RPC server
unavailable typically means there is a firewall in the way of the client
you're connecting to.

All machines are Windows XP SP2 with the firewall turned off. I for the
life of me cannot figgure this out. Could this be a DNS issue by any
chance?

Oddly enough, I'm having a problem with connecting to an xp (sp1) computer
that hosts a sql server with my xp sp2 machine (that i turned the firewall
off). I tried manually opening the ports that the firewall reports are
being 'hit' by outbound and inbound transmissions, but nothing will get my
connection to this computer in the other room to work. .... and I am a
domain admin, so theoretically, i should be able to connect to the computer
at will.

....and the authoring company of the software I'm trying to connect to won't
support the end user--you have to go thru a dealer, and have them talk to
support for you
