Hello microsoft.public.windows2000.general:

Here is a temporary workout to a vexing problem with no fundamental
explanation.

Properties not available error.txt

PROBLEM:

Right-clicking on file in Windows Explorer to get file properties
gives error message:

------------------------------------------
Desktop

The properties for this item are not available

OK
------------------------------------------

Double-clicking on the file (a .zip file) opens not the subject file
but another, completely different folder.

SOLUTION:

Close all instances of Windows Explorer. Then reopen and the
properties for the item are now available as expected

DISCUSSION:

I posted a bug note on this error message earlier this year to the
microsoft.public.windowsnt newsgroup (2003-05-04). At that time the
solution was to shorten the dpathfname. Here, I found a simpler
solution before doing the more complete Google search of the
newsgroups. So I wasn't able to test this problem against the earlier
problem symptoms and solution.

I have had some problems with Windows Explorer over the past weeks,
where Explorer generates an error and shuts down. It may be
associated with hkSFV file verification checking and creation, or with
a lot of cut and paste of folders being moved around as I've
reorganized my directory structure.

The drive-path-filename length is 241 characters, as follows:

Path: 151 characters
T:\dloads\DLOADS2 (semi-sorted)\Cracks-Hacks-Serials\#
Microsoft\Microsoft.WindowsXP.All.Editions.Activation.Crack.v1.0.Multilingual.FIXED.READ.NFO-SAD

File name: 90 characters
microsoft.windowsxp.all.editions.activation.crack.v1.0.multilingual.fixed.read.nfo-sad.zip

The disk is a 200GB drive, formatted in NTFS as a single logical
drive in a 200GB extended partition. Running Windows 2000 SP3,
Promise Ultra100 TX2 HDD controller with subject drive. Tyan Tiger
MPX dual CPU AMD Athlon MP.
