Error: The database has been placed in a state.....

I have an Access 2000 database. When the database is opened in Access 2003
and then I try to open it simultaneously in 2000, I get the message: "The
database has been placed in a state by user Admin on machine "XXXXX" that
prevents it from being opened or locked.

If I reverse the process and open the database in 2000 and then
simultaneously try to open it on the 2003 machine it opens fine.

How do I fix this problem?????

One solution is to have front-end and back-ends. We were running 3 different
version of Access one time.
Use the oldest version for the back-end and create links from each front-end
to the tables in the back-end.
