Error sending/receiving signed email

We receive the following popup error message whenever
attempting to read or send any signed email messages that
include a digital signature.

MS Outlook
"Can't open this item. A required action was not
successful due to an unspecified error."

Below is our configuration
Windows XP Pro SP1
Outlook XP 2002 SP3

All unsigned emails open successfully. Any suggestions?
