Hope someone out here can help with this nightmare ! I get the following
message when tring to install programs thaty had always worked on system
before 16-bit MS-DOS subsystem path to the program that you are trying to
start or uninstall C:\Windows\System32|Autoexec.nt. The system file is not
suitable for running MS-DOS and Microsoft windows applications. Choose Close
to terminate the application. I have tried the fix as started in article ID #
324767 but it does not fix problem however it now make a new problem stating
NTVDM Kernel:Missing 16-bit system module .Please re-install the following
module to your system32 directory: SYSTEM.DRV. So I find the fix for that and
it just makes the first message return . I fell like a ping pong ball with no
hope of repairing Windows XP

Hi Bently

I had the same problem that you have been having, I found what out what the
problem was on my system. A program call Windows Serve Ad got installed on my
system. I deleted from my computer by using the Windows Add/Remore program in
the control panel. Once I removed the program I did not get the problem back.
If you can not find that program try ---winad or windupdater. Other people
have mention these program that worked for them.

Let me know if this worked

Hi Bently - Try this fix, courtesy of MVP Kelly Theiriot:

"This installaton program will reinstall the missing or corrupt Windows XP
system files command.com, autoexec.nt and config.nt. The absence or
corruption of one or more of these files causes a "16 Bit Subsystem" error.

XP_Fix.EXE by TRF Systems, Inc.
http://www.visualtour.com/downloads/xp_fix.exe

More info here:

Error Message: MS-DOS or 16-bit Windows-based program
http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_m.htm#16bit"

Then, courtesy of flrman1, here:
http://forums.techguy.org/archive/index.php/t-280212.html

"First in safe mode click on My Computer then click Tools > Folder Options.
In Folder options click on the View tab. Under Files and Folders tick "Show
hidden files and folders" then uncheck "Hide file extensions for known file
types" and uncheck "Hide protected operating system files (recommended)".
Now click "Like current folder" then "Apply" and "OK"

Now find and delete these files:

C:\WINNT\system\windupdate.exe (added by JB: note the spelling - the
added 'd')
C:\WINNT\system.css

Delete this folder:

c:\freescan

Also in safe mode navigate to the C:\Windows\Temp folder. Open the Temp
folder and go to Edit > Select All then Edit > Delete to delete the entire
contents of the Temp folder.

Go to Start > Run and type %temp% in the Run box. The Temp folder will open.
Click Edit > Select All then Edit > Delete to delete the entire contents of
the Temp folder.

Finally go to Control Panel > Internet Options. On the General tab under
"Temporary Internet Files" Click "Delete Files". Put a check by "Delete
Offline Content" and click OK. Click on the Programs tab then click the
"Reset Web Settings" button. Click Apply then OK.

Empty the Recycle Bin"

Run the fix file again after you're done w/the above.

Hi

Your autoexec.nt problem is most likely caused by a worm or if you have
WinXP SP2 and AVAST (antivirus software) installed, it also can cause
this error.

You can put back the standard version of autoexec.nt/config.nt by
copying a backup copy held in %windir%\repair\ to %windir%\system32\
(%windir% is typically C:\Windows) instead of using the procedure in
the KB article above.

Could be caused a trojan or something similar, e.g.
TrojanDownloader.Win32.Dia.a, more about this here:
http://groups.google.com/[email protected]

Also, AVAST (antivirus software) can be the cause if you
have WinXP SP2 installed:
