Error message

When I start my computer I get the following message - "Application failed to
initialize: 0x80010665" Neither the firewall nor defender applications are
turned on. I can turn on the firewall, but the defender application will not
turn on. It simply looks for an update and then fails to activate.
Suggestions please.

Go to Admin Tools off of Control Panel and select Services and see if the WD
service is stopped. If it's stopped try to start it. Also see if it's set to
Automatic startup, by right-clicking the service.

Thanks for the suggestion, but, when I follow your instructions, I find that
WD is set for "Automatic Startup" and the indicator says that it is
"Started." It is when I go to the Security Center that I find it is "Off",
and hitting the start button does not cause it to go on. The same conditions
pertain to the Firewall (it is also set for "Automatic Startup"), except that
I can make it go on using the start button. I also get an indication on the
bottom tool bar that there are "Windows Security Alerts."

Go to the Application Event log and see if the error message is in there.

If it's there, what does it say?

The error is in the log.. Event ID = 3
General:

to monitor third party Antivirus, AntiSpyware, and Firewall."

I solved the problem by doing a system restore and then correcting for the
resulting 0x80240029 updating error by using the fix that involves renaming
the SoftwareDistribution file.

Thank you, Mr. Arnold, for your input nonetheless.
