Error message on sending emails

Used to use Outlook Express but now use Outlook 2002, which is great except I
often get the error message "Could not complete the operation. One or more
parameter values are not valid" when sending emails. I have to close down
Outlook and after I have restarted it, the email goes out. It tends to
happen when I am sending the first email for the day, i.e. after first
opening Outlook. I have read in other posts where this same message appears
when using the Tasks folder, however mine only appears when I am trying to
send an email. My OS is Windows XP and I have installed the Service Pack 2.
Occasionaly Outlook crashes too and I often send the error report to
Microsoft, however I don't have the details of what the report says. Next
time I get one I will post it. Does anyone have any suggestions please for
stopping this error message?

What do you mean you have to register it? Have you set up your outgoing/SMTP
server to use the same authentication that your incoming/POP3 server does?
Are you connected to the internet when you send/receive? Is it using the same
ISP that you receive/send your mail through? Have you scanned your PST for
errors?

I didn't say anything about registering in my post. My Outgoing and Incoming
are set up correctly as I send and receive emails at other times, and yes I
am connected to the internet when I send/receive mail. Yes the same ISP is
used to send/receive mail. I just scanned my .pst files with my virus
software and there was no problem, is that what you mean when you say
scanning for errors?

There is a repair tool especially for the Outlook PST file (personal store).
It's called scanpst.exe. Close Outlook and do a search of your PC for this
file and then double-click it to browse to your PST file and run the scan.
Just follow the defaults. Run it until it has no more errors to repair. Make
sure you view hidden files and folders, do this through Windows Explorer
(Tools > Folder Options).

If you view your send/receive progress, are there any error
messages/numbers? Also, do you have antivirus set to scan incoming and
outgoing mail? This can cause problems as well and disabling or removing this
feature won't compromise your security since your real time scanner will
catch whatever may come in.

Also, make sure your polling frequence for mail is not set to be too
frequent since this can cause timeouts with your send/receive.

I have now scanned the PST file and the errors were repaired.
There are no error messages or numbers apart from the parameter one which
comes up when I can't send email.
I did have my virus scanner set to do emails so I have turned that off for
the moment to see if it makes a difference.
My polling frequency is set at 30 minutes, but I thought this wasn't too
frequent so haven't changed it.
I will see how this goes for now, if it happens again I will send another
post. I will also try to obtain any error message details that come up when
Outlook occasionally crashes, as it may be connected.
thank you for your help, it is much appreciated. Let's hope this fixes the
problem.

Cheers,

30 minutes is not too frequent for polling frequency, you were right to leave
that alone. My concern is that many people set Outlook to poll every minute
which doesn't give it time enough to contact the server and download mail
before it's contacting the server again.

If Outlook crashes again, please also check your application event viewer
for any Office-related errors.

As for antivirus scanning emails, often just turning that feature off isn't
enough to stop the problems. If you continue experience the same issues,
uninstall/reboot/reinstall your AV software and during installation and
configuration tell it not to scan emails.

Good luck and keep me posted!

I am having problems sending emails as well. Started on 10/30/07. Event log
shows problem as: Faulting application outlook.exe, version 11.0.8169.0,
stamp 465f28e3, faulting module outllib.dll, version 11.0.8169.0, stamp
465f2870, debug? 0, fault address 0x002d7851
It has crashed 6 times today - every time it's when I hit the "send" to
transmit my email. It crashed 4 times on 10/30. I did not use the computer
between 10/30 and today. I've run the detect and repair. I've checked for
updates. I've rebooted my computer and nothing helps.

What is the eventID and source of those application event viewer errors? Is
there any send/receive errors/numbers when you enable viewing the
send/receive progress? What version of Outlook are you using?

Here are a bunch of troubleshooting steps to try. Test Outlook inbetween each
one to see if it is working again.

Make sure Office is fully patched, reapply the last SP since sometimes that
has to be done again.

If you're running Plaxo, that could be the culprit.

Check your AV software, particularly if you're running a Suite which
integrates AV, anti spam, firewall, internet security. Uninstall and
reinstall but configure it not to scan incoming/outgoing mail. This won't
compromise any security, your real time scanner will take care of you as long
as your AV is updated regularly.

Scan your PST for errors. Make sure you can find your PST, it's located in a
hidden folder. Make sure you use Windows Explorer to unhide hidden files and
folders and that you can see known file extensions. Go to file/folder search
and search for scanpst.exe. Double-click it, follow all the instructions
including browsing to the correct location of your PST. If it encounters
errors and repairs them, run scanpst again (until it no longer finds errors).

Create a new Outlook profile:

Good luck and let me know how you make out.

Office is fully patched.
Could not find Plaxo on my computer nor was it listed as running in the task
manager processes or applications.
Our AV software is managed on the network. Don't have any way to change.
The software doesn't crash when doing a "send and receive" just when you
click "send" from within a message so don't think the AV software would be
the problem. When software reopens after it crashes the message I was trying
to send is in the outbox and when software does the automatic send and
receive the message is sent and it does not crash.
I ran the scanpst.exe against my two pst files. It did find errors and did
repair. Ran a second time and it said no errors. I reopend Outlook and
tried to send another message and it crashed again. Same error but here is
the entire error message from the event log copied to clipboard

Check your COMs and Add Ins for Plaxo or other integrations that may
interfere with Outlook.

Close Outlook and rename the following files: outcmd.dat, frmcache.dat.
*.srs, extend.dat. These files will recreate when Outlook opens. These are
all files located in a hidden folder so make sure you unhide hidden
files/folders first.

G

Guest

Checked both and didn't find any reference to Plaxo. Did find AV and I
disabled it. I renamed all the files you suggested and restarted Outlook.
Tried to send a test message and it crashed again. Event log still shows
same error.

I noticed there was a file named "Outlook.nk2" dated the same day that this
problem started. I closed outlook, renamed it, restarted outlook and sent a
test message and YES! no crash!!!! The only file you had me change that did
not get recreated was the frmcache.dat. Should I rename it back?

G

The .nk2 file is the "nickname" list, the dropdown list of people you send to
most often.
Don't worry about the frmcache.dat file. It will recreate when it's needed.
Glad you solved your issue.

Hi Kathleen,

My Outlook is not bringing up the parameter values error message any more
since I last posted, so it appears your advice has fixed it. Thank you so
much for your help. There are a couple of other minor issues relating to
crashing and freezing, but once I get more detail, I will make a new post as
this one is too long now.
