Error Message Help

I need help on an error message i am getting when i try and run a MS-DOS
base program (Civilcad - a surveyors software program)

This program ran successfully many times before. I now get an error message
that pops up in a window titled "16 Bit MS-DOS Subsystem"

The message is:

C:\CCAD5\BCSK_W32.PIF
C:\Windows\system32\Autoexec.nt. The system file is not suitable for running
MS-DOS and Microsoft Windows applications. Choose 'Close" to terminate the
application.

In the window there are two buttons 'Close' and 'Ignore'. No matter what i
choose the program just terminates.

This message also came up when i download a freeware program from the net
which i think may be MS-DOS base as well.

I had some trouble with some adware etc in the registry a while ago but all
is clear according to all the various scanners i run.

Computer is HP Pavilion zv5000 laptop running Windows XP - SP2.

Any helpful suggestions greatly appreciated.

Thanks in Advance
