Error message 3051 encountered when trying to edit Access database

Full error message reads:

The Microsoft Jet database engine cannot open the file <name>. It is already
opened exclusively by another user, or you need permission to view its data.
(Error 3051)

I'm using Access 2003 to run a membership database for a charity, and this
is the first time I've had this message. I had left the D/B open unattended
on my Vista desktop, and when I returned found I could not save a new record.

Only security that is enabled is that the D/B is password protected and no
other person has access to it.

It may just be a hung LDB file. With the database closed, check the folder
where it lives. There should be no LDB file. If there is one, delete it.
Then open Access but do not open the database. Compact it and reopen it.

Ah - thats IT! So easy to go off in totally the wrong direction! Problem was down to a physical read/write locking switch on the USB stick being knocked to write protect.

Thanks for your help.
