Error Message 0x8004210A -- HELP!

C

ChildFree23

Whenever I try to receive incoming email using MS Outlook 2003, I
get the following error Message:

Task 'ChildFree23 - Receiving' reported error (0x8004210A) : 'The
operation timed out waiting for a response from the receiving
(POP) server. If you continue to receive this message, contact
your server administrator or Internet service provider (ISP).'

I was told by my ISP's tech support to disable incoming mail
scanning in Norton AntiVirus, and was able to receive mail that
way. I also looked up the related MS Knowledge Base article, and
it was of no help.

Does anyone know of any "common sense" workarounds or solutions
that DOESN'T involve disabling one's virus protection?

Thank you,
ChildFree23

Hi ChildFree23,

The mail scanning is a marketing ploy to scare users into unnecessary steps
to protect themselves.

If you have real-time AV scanning turned on, and if you attempt to open a
virus infected message or a virus attachment, you will receive a notice that
the file has been quarantined. If you think scanning outgoing messages is
important, then you need to think about the source of the infection - that's
right, your hard drive which is ALREADY protected by your AV real-time
scanner - which you update weekly, right?

So, tell me again how this "feature" which breaks sending/receiving, and
causes multiple downloads of the same message, "helps" the user?

Sorry - this just gets annoying after a while. All AV and firewall/Internet
Security programs try to scare users rather than educate them as to best
practices. People who rely on software to do all the heavy lifting without
learning what is being lifted are not helped by the software, but crippled
by it.

Off my soapbox now ...

And just how is your soap box going to protect me from someone
else's infected computer?

I'll thank you for your help when you give it to me.

Cancel the alarm. I solved my own problem WITHOUT disabling the
Norton AV protection. I "repaired" my Outlook 2003 installation,
then uninstalled/reinstalled the AntiVirus component of Norton
SystemWorks, with the necessary system reboots. I can now
download email and keep my virus protection intact.

So in case anyone else has a similar problem ...

Thanks again,
