HI all,

A friend cannot start their Vaio and gets a black screen with the above
error message.

He can't find his XP disks either. Can I use my Dell XP disk to start
his pc and hopefully repair the damage?

Hope someone can help?

Regards

No, you cannot use your Dell Windows XP to repair
a Sony Vaio PC. Contact Sony support and order
their Windows XP recovery CD.

Didn't get far with Sony as they are in the US. UK is closed and doesn't
have the chat facility either ;-(

Can I use my Dell disk to at least start the Vaio?

You probably will not be able to use your Dell XP disk, as that was
made by Dell to only work with Dell computers (you can use it with any
other Dell computer).

Aditionaly, a message of that nature with out making any changes in
the BIOS would surgest that the hard drive died. You should check in
the BIOS of the laptop to see if the hard drive registers. If it dose
not register, then it is probably dead, and you will need a new one,
and you (legaly) should buy another copy of XP, but if your firend
still has they’re CD-Key, you could download the same version that
CD-Key was ment for (could be one of a few posabilitys which could be
XP Home, XPHome SP1, XP Home SP2, XP Pro, XP Pro SP1, XP Pro SP2) and
use his CD-Key.

Download a hard drive diagnostic routine from the hard drive
manufacturer's web site and test the drive.
