Error installing a device in Windows XP

T

Tommy

Hello all,

I tried to install the drivers for a device but during
this process, the device manager froze.

I had to restart Windows XP but the driver did not isntall
correctly. When I try to reinstall it, it says it can not
do this because the device handle already exists.

The device is currently seen as "Network Controller", but
it is an ISDN PCI modem.

I can not uninstall the device in device manager, I can
disable it. And system restore does not work :-(

I also tried to physically remove it, also tried a
different pci slot .......

Help anyone?

Tommy, you could try removing a key from the registry. Actually export
and save as .reg file in case you have to reinstall them. Go to Start>Run
type: regedit
Navigate to HKLM\System\Current Control Set\Enum\PCI\click on the + and
click the first folder. There are a quite a few folders but look at each one
until you see your PCI Modem. If you
have more than one Control Set then repeat the procedure for each. See if
that will free it up.
