Error Downloading OffLine Address Book from Exchange Server 2000 in Outlook 2003

Neil Hobbs

Hi,

I am posting this message in the hope that somebody will be able to assist
me with an issue that my users are experiencing.

Currently when my users are attemptting to download the 'Offline Address
Book' from within Outlook 2003 SP1 from our Exchange server which is running
Exchange 2000 Server with Service Pack 3 installed. They get the following
error message when using their mailbox in non-cached mode:

An error occured while opening the Microsoft Exchange offline address book
on the Exchange server

When they do the following command combination:

Tools - Send/Receive - Download Address Book...

When a user is using a cached copy of their mailbox, they get the following
error message:

Task 'Microsoft Exchange Server' reported error (0x8004010F) : 'The
operation failed. An object could not be found.'

I have found the following support article, which explains this error
message when the clients are using Outlook 2002:

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;289969

I then found a link to the following support article, which talks the
Exchange 2000 server, which holds the OAB has been installed - but I only
have a single Exchange server, which is active 24/7

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/273364/EN-US/

From going to this article, I then found a link to the following support
article:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/275171/EN-US/

Which talks about resetting system folders on Exchange 2000 Server.

I am unable to correct this by rebuilding the 'Offline Address Book' as I
have done this a number of times. The server pre-dates myself as well as of
the current administrative staff.

In an effort to gain a better understanding of the issue, I set the
Diagonistic Logging level on the 'MSExchangeSA\OAL Generator' catergory to
'Maximum' and manually triggered a rebuild of the Offline Address Book.
After looking at the Application log on the Exchange server, I saw that this
was successfully rebuilt on the server, resulting in the Event ID: 9107

Offline Address List generation has finished

Following this, I again attempted to download the Offline Address Book and I
got the error message displayed within Microsoft Outlook 2003:

"An error occured while opening the Microsoft Exchange offline address book
on the Exchange server" or "Task 'Microsoft Exchange Server' reported error
(0x8004010F) : 'The operation failed. An object could not be found.",
depending on wether they are using a non-cached or cached mailbox
respectively.

At this point, it appears that the issue could be client related, namely
Outlook; as the Offline Address Book can be successfully rebuilt. But I am
not sure. If you are able to assist in anyway, I would be most appreciative
for any information that you can provide.

Many thanks in advance.

Neil
