Error code 3464

Okay - I am trying to take my list of names and addresses and "dedupe" it.
The instructions I have received in the past from Microsoft is to create a
query and then hit the "totals" icon and group all of the fields by var
except for the field that has the info I want to dedupe.
However, I get an error code 3464 data type mismatch when I run the query.
All of the other answers I have seenon these threads deal with how you type
the sorting criteria using "'s and ('s but I am using nothing in the sort or
criteria. I am just grouping them inthe hopes of pulling out the first
record of any duplicates.
I have to get this project accomplished but I have no where to turn. I hope
one of you brainiacs can help

Instead of Var, group by something like First, Last, Min, or Max.

I can't group every field by first or otherwise because it only will return
the first, last or min of all of the fields. I have to make the field
containg the duplicates the first group and then put something in the other
fields to get it to generate something or it doesn't accomplish what I need.
All I can get is the error! If you can think of an easier way to delete
duplicate records I am all ears - so to speak
