Error Code 0x800CCC0F in Windows Mail

My wife is getting this error message and code when trying to send mail
using Windows Mail.
Your server has unexpectedly terminated the connection. Possible causes for
this include server problems, network problems, or a long period of
inactivity. Subject 'Fw: FW: When you reach the end of your rope....',
Account: 'pop.charter.net', Server: 'smtp.charter.net', Protocol: SMTP, Port:
25, Secure(SSL): No, Error Number: 0x800CCC0F
My OS is Vista w/ SP1.
My antivirus program is Trend Micro, but it doesn't appear to impact my
ability to send and receive in Windows Mail ---- just hers.
Any suggestions would be most appreciated. Thank you.

"Unexpected" termination is usually caused by interference from a non-
compatible antivirus program. Trend Micro antivirus is among the top
three troublemakers for Windows Mail.
First, go into its settings and disable any interaction with email, then try
Windows Mail again. If no improvement, do a trial uninstall.

Another option (instead of uninstalling Trend Micro) is to upgrade to
Windows Live Mail, which is more resistant to the adverse effects of
overly intrusive antivirus products: http://get.live.com/wlmail/overview

In any case you must disable any antivirus email scanning, for the reason
explained here:

Thank you for the information. Question: Why would Trend Micro A/V be
causing this problem for her and not me when we are using the same computer -
just different accounts?
Upgrading to Windows Live Mail is a good alternative, but before doing so, I
wanted to ask if using system restore is viable and going back a couple of
days to when all was working OK?
Many thanks.

It will, eventually.

You're right on the money. It just did. Now I am in the same boat that she
is --- receiving OK but cannot send. I'm leaning toward your suggestion
about upgrading to windows live mail, but before doing so, I wanted to ask if
it is necessary to save all contacts/address book to a pen drive before doing
so?
Thanks.

The interaction between antivirus email scanning and Windows Mail is
like predicting when someone playing Russian Roulette will hear a bang.

No, it not necessary to save anything. Windows Live Mail will not
disturb anything in Windows Mail. It makes a copy of the data and
imports it during the initial install.

Update: I uninstalled Trend Micro Antivirus. I have upgraded to Windows
Live Mail. No change. Both of our accounts are on one machine - just
different login/password. We can receive mail but cannot send. Here is a
copy of the error message we get when trying to send:

Your server has unexpectedly terminated the connection. Possible causes for
this include server problems, network problems, or a long period of
inactivity.

Subject 'Re: Error Code 0x800CCC0F'
Server: 'smtp.charter.net'
Windows Live Mail Error ID: 0x800CCC0F
Protocol: SMTP
Port: 25
Secure(SSL): No

I have been fighting this problem for 2 weeks now and nothing has worked. I
have contacted my ISP (Charter communications) and they offered minimal
support - nothing on Vista.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. I am at wits end on trying to
figure out what I did that caused this. Many thanks.

Sorry to hear that uninstalling Trend Micro and upgrading to WLM did
not cure your problem.
Something is still interfering with the sending process. Are you running
any other third party security software, such as Spybot or Zone Alarm?

No other anitvirus software installed. Window's Defender is here as a
default program that came with Vista. Problem there maybe???? I also have
Webroot Spy Sweeperinstalled as my anti spam program. Anything there I
should check? Many thanks.

Windows Defender is an antispyware program, not an antivirus program.
I've had no trouble with it for the last few months.

Antispam programs must read incoming email and newsgroup posts to
function; but many programs that read them as they come in and have the
option of blocking them from reaching Windows Mail are known to
cause problems in Windows Mail. While you're waiting for someone
familiar with that specific antispam program to answer, it's probably
worthwhile to try disabling its antispam function, and perhaps the whole
program.

Windows Defender has never caused a problem with Windows Mail.
Can't say the same for Spy Sweeper. As a test, disable it's email involvement.
If no improvement, do a trial uninstall of Spy Sweeper.
