Error 1706

I have newly installed Windows XP Professional. Office 2000
Professional was installed from the Administrator account
and all Office programs run fine from Administrator.
When I try to open an Office program from the limited
account I get, "Error 1706. No valid source could be found
for product Microsoft Office 2000 SR-1 Professional. The
Windows Installer cannot continue". Click "OK" and this
message appears 2 more times before the program opens.

I tried opening the programs with the Office CD in place
but the result was the same. I looked around in the
Knowledge Base and elsewhere but couldn't find instructions
that seemed both relevant and that I could understand.

Can anyone direct me to assistance? I appreciate it!

I had the same problem with my set up, It appears to be a problem with the Office updates
If you install the updates BEFORE you go to each account and open the program you WILL get the 1706 error

Proceed with install in this manner and you wont get the error
Install Office 2K as Adminstrator. Including Outlook. Let the programs load then close them
If you are not using Adminstrator account for personal use, Fill in the info the wizard asks for using bogus info. (noone @nowhere.com, pop3.nowhere.com, smtp.nowhere.com
Let the wizard launch outlook, when you see the Outlook welcome message in your inbox, you are done with adminstrator account for now
Now got into each limited account, opening at least 1 Office program
There will be a pop up window asking for the initials of the user for that account. they should be in the box already. Just click ok
Once the initial box dialogue is done the programs should open as normal office programs
Now set up the E-mails for the various limited accounts
After all accounts are done go to the Office update web site and start updating your Office programs

It worked for me

I had the same problem, tried Aardil's suggestion but it did not wor
for me.

Is your administrator's account really a network account instead o
XP's local system account? That will be the next thing I will try.

Did you solve your problem yet? Would like to know the solution if yo
did

I was getting this error every time I was launching excel. I solved i
by opening a command prompt, navigating to the folder that containe
excel.exe and typing:

runas /user:administrator excel.exe

You have to enter the administrator password when prompted.
Excel then launched, and when through the update process, but his tim
it was successful

Thank you for the tip.
I was running under Windows XP Pro which has more networking capability
than Windows XP HOME.
I ended up creating an user account on the XP Pro using my network
account name. Since that is the user name I logged in to the XP Pro
with, now I can installed OFFICE 2k again and open it without the error
1706.

It was an account priviledge issue after all.

Sorry it didnt work for you :-

I didnt think about the differance between a true network and a local system account
My setup has worked for me everytime but it has been on the local system account
