What happens if you go to a command prompt and do:

net start "windows installer

and hit enter

If that apparently succeeds--try the install/uninstall operation then.

If the solution proposed here didn't work for you (It
didn't work for me) you may want to consider the
following solution which DID work for me.

When you installed the program, the following startup
entry was added to your system:

C:\Program Files\Microsoft AntiSpyware\gcasServ.exe

But some of us get error 101 when that startup entry is
launched.

So instead of launching 'gcasServ.exe, you should INSTEAD
have the system launch the following:

C:\Program Files\Microsoft AntiSpyware\gcasDtServ.exe

That solves the problem. I don't know why or what is the
difference between gcasDtserv. exe and gcasServ.exe; I
just know it solves the issue.

Paul

If like me you are getting error 101 and none of the
suggestions shown here have worked for you, give the
following a try (It is working for me).

When you installed the system Microsoft added the
following startup item to your system:

E:\Program Files\Microsoft AntiSpyware\gcasServ.exe

For some unknown reason (even MS doesn't seem to know
why), some of us get error 101 when that application is
launched. None of the tips provided thus far on this
newsgroups has solved the issue for many of us.

So I suggest replacing that startup item with the
following:

E:\Program Files\Microsoft AntiSpyware\gcasDtServ.exe

That will start the application in the systemtray (just
like it should have done with gcasserv.exe but doesn't);
and it will work just as expected.

Paul W.

I'm not clear just which of the muddle of "instructions" in this thread you
have tried.

Steve Dodson's instructions have worked for nearly everyone.

If you've tried those and failed, can you say which OS and version, and
whether the failure happens for all accounts on the machine?
