I have a Compaq Presario, about 2 years old. I turned it on and it started
making a steady beep. I can't get to the bios. I tried booting from the
Windows CD and got the BSOD with error 0x0000007F and more 0x000...in
brackets. It has on-board video. I tried reseating the memory. What else
can I try. Is the motherboard fried? Thank you in advance for any
assistance.

SOMETHING is fried.

You need to go to the Compac support area and find out what those
beeps mean.

For general info on this error code:
http://aumha.org/a/stop.htm
0x0000007E: SYSTEM_THREAD_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED

Since it seems to be hardware issue I would suggest contacting Compaq tech
support and/or post to a hardware newsgroup.

Does it beep every time it's turned on? Here is one link about BIOS beep
codes which depend on the particular BIOS brand (what is on your laptop?).
I don't see anything about one long beep.

I tried but couldn't find one for a steady 1 beep.

The 0x0000007F error code reads UNEXPECTED_KERNEL_MODE_TRAP. The
values that follow it are important at interpreting it. But it
indicates, nevertheless, a hardware problem of some sort. Was any
new hardware or new hardware drivers added to the computer recently?
Or were there any recent hardware changes?
