Erase only some files from HDD

Dave_s

I am looking for software to securely erase a few files from 100 GB and
200 GB IDE ATA hard drives used as backup.
Cost is an issue, lower the better. I do not want to erase all files
from these hard drives. Drives are on WIN XP PRO system and a WIN98SE
system.

What software are you having success with?
Thank you for recomendations, DAve_S

You can just delete those files and fill remaining disk space with dummy
files.

I would say that is the best option for medium security. For really
high security there is no option but copying off the files to keep
and wiping the wholepartition or disk.

XP has free space wiping built in

type the following into the start->run box:

cipher /w:c

(the /w means wipe clear space, c is the drive letter to wipe)

Look for Eraser. Free (last I knew), and works well. With Eraser
installed, you can delete files, then right click on the Recycle Bin
and select Erase (instead of just Empty).
