Epson printing only in red

I gave an Epson Stylus Photo 870 printer to a friend. I had used it for
about two years (purchased in March 2001), and it worked flawlessly. It
also worked well for her for awhile, then suddenly began to print everything
only in tones of red. Does anyone have any ideas about what would cause
this problem and how to correct it? I do know she is still using the
cartridges that were in the printer when I gave it to her. I know more than
she does, but I also don't know much about printers other than the basic
configuration. Could older cartridges cause such a problem? She knows very
little about hardware, and I would like to get some ideas before I drive in
and look at it. She says that she pressed some button on the front of the
printer immediately before this happened, but she can't remember what she
was doing. It seems that she was sending controls by using the front of the
printer instead of using software for that purpose. She is using Win
XP-Home Edition and has been using the printer exclusively to print
photographs.

Thanks,
MaryL

I have an Epson Stylus C62 that was purchased about a year ago and not
used until about a month ago. I am having the same problem as below,
except my printer will only print in blue tints. With school
approaching..I'm getting kind of worried. I tried what was suggested,
but I couldn't run nozzle
check and head cleaning because "Ink is low or out." Which it
wasn't...I found an unopened color cartirdge...then it said it was
loaded incorrectly..now I know I put it in right because I have had
Epson printers in the past (which I loathe, I've never had a proper
working Epson) and I was the one who initially set the printer up in
the first place. I'm running out of ideas and patience.

Have you tried reinserting the cartridge? Is it an Epson or aftermarket
cartridge? If you put the cartridge in a year ago and haven't printed with
it you will need a new one. Have you tried reinstalling the driver with your
antivirus software disabled?
