Epson Printer (Color 880) will not print per instructions

I have a Dell Pentium 4 w/ Windows XP home ed. sp2, I recently (last
evening) installed an Epson Stylus Color 880 printer to my comp. All cables
and power are attached, and seem to be in operation.
The comp recognizes that I have a printer now , but when I direct a document
to print I r'cv an error message, " Print error occurred, please check
printer"

Install the software BEFORE connecting the printer to the PC.
