Epson 880 problem 4 LED's blinking

Hi,
I have this same Epson Stylus Color 880, my problem is that when I power up
the printer it moves around the resting area slowly back and forth, parks
itself then the four LED's start blinking. This normally woud indicate that
the waste ink pad needs to be changed, I attempted to reset the waste
register in the EEPROM using two different program, connecting the printer
through both the USB port and LPT 1 port and in all instances I had a
communications error and could not change or read any EEPROM registers yet
Windows 98 does recognize the printer, so there must be some communication
between the PC and the printer.
I was wondering if there might be something I need to do to enable
communication like actually changing the waste pad or cleaning or some other
simple task to enable the service program to communicate with the printer.
Or maybe I have a different problem.
Thanks any help would be appreciated,
Jacek G.
Also do you have or know where I can obtain the Epson service manual for
this printer.

This might work-

1. Turn printer off.
2. Disconnect printer from computer.
3. With printer turned off, hold down both the Paper and the Cleaning
buttons.
4. Continue to hold the buttons and turn the printer on.
5. When the Paper light starts to flash, release both buttons.
6. Immediately press the Cleaning button and hold it down for at least
10
seconds (until all the lights begin to flash and the printer will
begin to
reset).
7. When the Power light is steady, the printer should work.
8. Don't forget to clean out the waste ink tray and if necessary
replace the
waste ink pad.

Hey,
Thanks a lot, your initialization procedure worked. Now all I have to do is
replace (or clean) the pad and get all the nozzles to fire about (85% are
working) and I have myself a nice printer. Turns out that I must have reset
the waste ink pad counter in my previous attempts because now that my
service program was able to communicate with the printer I checked the value
of the waste ink pad counter register and it was already zero.

Thank you for your help,
Jack G.

You performed a counter reset following a/m magical button procedure.
The service program you tried to use cannot communicate in ieee1284-4 packet
mode, so it was simply impossible to reset the counter, as the printer shows
"off line" status in a standard mode.

Thanks for the tip. This helped me, but I was wondering how do I go
about cleaning the waste ink tray? Where is this located? I can see
the pad and a little tube that leads somewhere below it that I can't
figure out how to reach. If you or anyone else could shed some light
on this, I'd appreciate it.

Thanks,

Michael
