Epson 740 replacement

I have an Epson 740 that I love, but it's getting hard to find ink for
it. What would be the current equivalent to the 740 in the Epson line?

Thanks,
Cathy

Office depot carries the ink, I've ordered the ink over the net for my
740, and the ink is still for sale at Costco. I find the fact you say
you having problems finding the ink hard to beleive unless your live
in a small town.

Yeah I have one too, and there are plenty of places online you can find ink.
Amazon, buy.com, etc. all have it. Almost any store that sells ink
cartridges will have them.

I appreciate all the ink help, but what I really want to know is what
is the current generation of the 740? If I wanted to buy the newest
incarnation of the 740, which Epson printer would that be?

It would be the C62 or 64, C82 or 84. They are 4 ink printers. At the time
of the 740 there was one higher machine built for business use. That would
be the C82 or 84. Now the C64 uses pigmented inks.

I have the C82 and I love it. You also will pay a lot less for a printer
that does a lot more than your 740 did. www.atlex.com is also a great place
to buy ink whether for your old printer or a new one.

"Direct" replacement printers are the 680, C60, C61, C62 series (now in
market, you can find only the C62 model).
Alternative ones C64, C82, C84.

I used to have one, Cathy. What a clogging turtle!

I now have a Canon i850 and the difference is so great it's like moving
from the "stone age" to the (ink) "jet age".

This printer never has to have its print head cleaned because of clogs
(I used to waste half a tank with the 740 cleaning heads!). The i850
has a much higher resolution and prints at least 3 times as fast as the
Epson at its highest resolution. It prints lab quality digital photos!
I think the Epson had but a few dozen nozzles. The i850 has about
2,000 I believe. The difference is speed. The nozzles are also much
smaller for greater quality output.

Also, in standard print, it must print as least 3-5 times as fast as the
Epson 740 (and with sharper text). It's quiet, quiet, quiet! I often
have to come back in the room just to see if it's still working because
of its silence. I refill the 4 individual ink tanks with quality bulk
ink for about $5.

I used to hate doing high quality output projects on the 740 because it
was soooo slowwwwwwwwwww. Working high quality on the i850 seems like
working at standard on Epson!!!

A team of wild horses couldn't make me go back to the 740! If I could
demonstrate this "baby" to you, you'd thank me for a life time.
Unfortunately, the i850 will be replaced by a still newer model. But
that's how it is in this business: there's always something better.

In many years of using Epson inkjet printers I have never once had a
clogged head. Early in my days of printing I got a tip from an Epson
inkjet forum to always keep an inkjet printer turned on and I have. I
was told it keeps the ink warm which prevents it thickening and
clogging. I have seen people state that keeping a printer on would
cause evaporation/drying of ink but I have never found this to be so,
in fact I get excellent mileage out of my ink cartridges compared to
friends who use their printers far less and always turn off (and have
lots of clogs). The only reason I got rid of my 6 year old 740
workhorse was because a mouse died in it and went thru the rollers.
Well I actually didn't get rid of it, my kids still use it and it is
going strong (despite only being used about once a month) and still
left on.

I've been feeding two 740s a diet of nothing but after market cartridges
from http://voltexx.com/ for 3 years now. $4 for black, $5 for color, no
clogs, photos print well. Shipping ranges from $3 for one to $6 for a
dozen.
