Epson 3170 with Lasersoft AI and Vuescan trial editions, my experience

First let me say that I had already installed the driver 1.25 update
from Epson.

Bottom line with Lasersoft I could only get a scan of the scanholder
with a blurred image inside it of the film. I had to close it down and
use the Epson full auto mode at only a max 1200 dpi res to scan the
film. The home user and pro modes would not offer up thumbnail
previews and I believe it may be due to the driver.

Next I tried Vuescan which evidently works directly(low level) with
the scanner ccd. Worked right off the bat, didn't hog my cpu like
lasersoft running through photoshop cs did(that may be adobe's fault
not lasersoft's). My first scan was ok without any tweaking for my
purpose at the time, of course I found the dollar sign watermarks all
over the photo very distracting so I just purchased the professional
version a few minutes ago.

I also found a tutorial for Vuescan here:

I believe I'll be happy with this product and thanks to Ed Hamrick for
porting it to the Epson 3170:)
