Epson 2400 - ink cartridges

Just bought an Epson 2400 printer. To change from photo black to matte
black, and vice versa, I have to close down the printer, change the
cartridge and re-start. Epson help desk said it had a faulty sensor
and the machine needed replacing. The local service centre says there
is no sensor and closing down and re-starting is the correct procedure.
This doesn't work every time and has to be repeated twice or three
times to work. As I print A3+ images for a photographic gallery this
changeover procedure is cumbersome and time-consuming and I find it
hard to believe Epson would design anything this primitive. Can anyone
put me right on the correct procedure?

Also, what is the life of the inks? The prints produced on my previous
Epson 890 had faded after two months on the wall.

Finally, the cartridges have a very limited capacity, a few A3+ images
and some cartridges are empty. I have heard that you can set up this
printer with bottles of ink which is much more economical. Can anyone
confirm whether or not this is the case, and if so where these can be
purchased (preferably in the UK).
