enhanced IDE HD on P4P800

I was trying to mount an older enhanced IDE hard drive from an old computer
on my P4P800 as a slave to retrieve some info but even with HD jumper
settings changed it will not let me boot up. Will the P4P800 just not accept
older enhanced IDE drives? Thanks.

More info: XP now operating on P4P800, the older HD was 98. Also the Ultra
IDE is running in NTFS mode while the older HD was Fat32. Could this be the
problem?

Was the old drive bootable? If so, you cannot have two active boot
partitions in one machine.

Sure you can.

To the OP:

Make sure the BIOS is set to boot from your main drive. Make sure the cable is installed correctly for two drives. Make sure the
jumpers are set correctly (not "cable select").

I've done exactly this sort of thing many times. I even temporarily slaved a boot disk that was severely virus infected; cleaned it
up in my machine, then retrieved data before a format.

It should work. If you get the same results after checking everything twice, try it off the secondary port as a primary drive
(unhook your CD drive)

changed the pin settings to master on the existing Ultra drive and
kept the other on slave. Still will not boot. I will try it on the
CDROM controler. Didn't think of that. Just wanted to make sure their
was no incompatability problems.

The only time I've seen a drive cause the system not to boot at all the ribbon cable was inserted backwards. Make sure that pin #1
is towards the power connector. I seem to remember in very old drives pin #1 was away from the power connector!

Do you have another system to check it in?

Sometimes, when mixing very old and new IDE drives, the slow one must
be the master in order to get both drives to recognize at once.

Another alternative is to put the old drive on the second IDE channel,
preferrably as master, and try it their. You may just disconnect the
CD/DVD usually hooked up their until your data transfer is done.
