"Engine Connection Lost" disk defragmenter error

M

michael favor

While trying to defragment a 114GB "C:\" drive using the
standard Windows 2000 Disk Defragmenter tool, the program
stops and displays the error message "Engine Connection
Lost" a minute or two after starting the defragment
process.

I can't find any reference to this in the Microsoft
Knowledge Base. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

regards,
michael.

Michael,

It could be that the defrag engine abnormally terminated due to a file
system issue. I would suggest doing a CHKDSK /R on the drive (will require
a reboot in order to perform) and see if CHKDSK finds/fixes any errors.
Afterwards, try running it again and see what happens. If it still has
problems, boot into Safe Mode and try from there and see what happens.
