Endnote "remove field codes" affecting Word

Here's an interesting one. I am writing my thesis using Word 2000 and
Endnote V.6 for my citations and reference list.

I have just tried to generate a reference list for one Chapter (just a trial
to see if it would work) - the reference list worked fine, but it affected
other things in the word Doc.

In the Word Doc I used styles for each of my various level headings, I also
used Captions for my Tables and Figures. After I generated the reference
list, I removed the field codes so that I could share the Chapter with my
supervisory committee. This step appears to have deleted my Level 1 Heading
(Chapter 5:). In the process (and I suspect as a result of this) it has also
changed all other headings (Levels 2-4) to appear as 4.1, 4.1.1, 4.2 etc
when they should be 5.1, 5.1.1, 5.2. Also, all my captions have now changed
from Figure 5.1, Figure 5.2, Table 5.1 etc to Figure 0.1, Figure 0.2, Table
0.1.

Any ideas on what could be happening here. Thanks

Hi Karen,

What did creating the reference list affect?
In the Word Doc I used styles for each of my various level headings, I also
used Captions for my Tables and Figures. After I generated the reference
list, I removed the field codes so that I could share the Chapter with my
supervisory committee. This step appears to have deleted my Level 1 Heading
(Chapter 5:). In the process (and I suspect as a result of this) it has also

0.1.

I believe I've tried this and haven't had problems, although perhaps someone
else will chime in, as I don't currently have EndNote installed.

An alternative, however, would be to select *only* the reference list and
use Word's "Unlink Field" command, which will convert the fields to plain
text as the EndNote command would (control-shift-F9). (I suspect, however,
that plenty of people are sharing chapters without removing the field
codes--as long as your committee doesn't attempt to update fields I don't
think it's a problem--or use the Lock Field command, shift-F9, which is
reversible as Unlink is not)
Any ideas on what could be happening here. Thanks
It is an interesting problem, don't know what could cause it.
