My parents have a problem with their Windows XP. They have Norton Internet
security whoch updates automatically so don't think it can be a virus
problem. Word and other programms constantly freeze and I have to resort to
ctrl+alt+del - when trying to turn the computer off the 'End
Program-MCCWSAAWIN window comes up saying this program is not
responding........ -if I press cancel it then turns off - however there is
obviously something wrong. Last night I did Windows updates, Live care one
time scan which picked up a few things but the problem is still there - what
could it be?

Without more information this is kind of a long shot.
Often times the "User Profile Hive Cleanup Service has helped many users
(myself included). Download and install it from:

A Google Groups, and Google Web search showed no reference to that file.
So, either you typed it wrong, or it's a random filename created by
malware.
