Thanks for the quick reply. I hoped someone could point directly
to the particular culprit... but I know, it's hard to guess it.
And I saw meanwhile (in Ad-aware Ad-watch, that came as part of
F-Secure) that the "DirectDBNotifyWndProc" processes are
numerous. And your advice confirms I can't escape a bit more
work to find... and helps me get the courage to do it.
(BTW I would like to share my first name with Schumi, but... I
am only "Michel"

Hi Michael,
Could be anything that is loaded onto the system at boot that is
not responding to the terminate command. You need to isolate and
disable the process. You can begin by trimming the startup load:

And also by selectively terminating processes using Task Manager
(hit ctrl+shift+escape) before attempting a shutdown.

Subject: End Program DirectDBNotifyWndProc
I have a PC (a new laptop with WXP FR SP2) that currently, each
time Shut Down is requested, stops with an "End Program"
windowlet saying "DirectDBNotifyWndProc" is not responding.
The only DBs on that PC are AFAIK the ones in Outlook Express
(which is often used), and the one in Works (which was never
used).
Anyone knows what I can do to get rid of that disturbing
message? TIA,
