End of Beta

Are Microsoft going to give everyone an update on whether
they plan to charge for this software before the beta
actually finishes?

This software seems ideal to use in educational
environments to help stop spyware but as usual there
seems to be no conformation on costs from Microsoft.

According to Steve Dodson from Microsoft, before the expiration date there
will be an update to MS AntiSpyware, which will delay the expiration time
and will fix some existing bugs in that application.

Then, some time later, you can expect Beta 2 version, and some more ;-) time
later the final product, which will be free of charge for licenced Windows
users. But if you want manageable "corporate" version - that should appear
after releasing of the final MSAS - this version will be provided at some
cost.

MS announced in a public meeting that this software would be free for
licensed Windows users some time ago. We have posted as much at least 100
times in these newsgroups. Unformtunately if you are reading these on the
web instead of a newreader, you probably can't search for one of the
previous posts.

The beta version is free. It has a timebomb set. Mine
expires on July 31, 2005 and there is no information how
to upgrade/update the beta version. So it may not actually
be free. I haven't seen any updates or upgrades pushed out
for this software as of yet. If anyone does know about it
please advise. Thanks.

In case you didn't see it

Laura;
It has been public announced by Microsoft that the final version will be
free to home users.
Not just yours, but everyone's expires the end of July.
It has also been stated that there will be a fix so the expiration is
extended and this will precede Beta 2.

Hi Laura

This is what we have from MS, first message from Mr Dodson, second
message
from Bill himself.......... ;)

Message from Mr Dodson, MSFT

I would say that the expiration issue will be resolved fairly soon as
we will push forward the timebomb. We are in the final test pass on the
next release and as soon as we have finished the testing, it will be
broadly announced. The next version should put a dent in reducing the
following major issues:

1) July 31 Timebomb
2) LSP breaking.
3) Flying toasts when start bar is docked on the side.

I am real excited that these items will be fixed soon so we can focus
on finalizing beta 2.

At the RSA conference, Bill Gates announced the consumer and enterprise
strategy for Microsoft Windows AntiSpyware.
"The personal version of the final Windows AntiSpyware software (will
be) available at no additional charge to licensed Windows customers as
part of the Windows value proposition. The offering will offer full
functionality to consumers, including the ability to detect and remove
spyware, continual protection that helps guard against more than 50
ways that Web sites and programs can put spyware on a PC, and
protection against the latest threats through the combined efforts of
the SpyNetT community and Microsoft researchers. For business
customers, with more complex infrastructure support, management and
deployment needs, Microsoft plans a managed anti-spyware solution that
will be available as part of a paid solution."
