Encrypting File System

Guest

On a Microsoft Windows XP Professional system (SP2), an NTFS folder and files
were encrypted, but the certificate was not backed up to a floppy diskette.
The folder and files were backed up using the Windows XP Backup. The PC was
re-imaged. The folders were restored, but the encrypted files are still
encrypted and can not be open.

Have tried restoring the files to a FAT32 volume, but they are still
encrypted.

Can anyone help?

No! You are beyond all hope. Your files are forever more inaccessible.

Even with the User directory backed up? There is no way to recover the
certificate or keys from the backup?

If you did not export the key to a floppy and save it in multiple places
(dresser drawer, safe deposit box, shed in back yard etc) you don't have a
chance in the world of ever using those files again.

Now, if you were to tell the NSA that they contain important information
concerning BinLaden, they may be able to decrypt them to see.

If you do not have the certificates the files are totally irretrievable.

Sure. You know anybody at the NSA? They might be able to help.

XP encryption is to me a danger that should be removed. It is strong
encryption, but only as secure as the user password - and many users
have either blank passwords or ones that can be guessed within a few
minutes.

And what National Secrets do 99% of home users have on their computers
they need to protect (other than the Nudy Pics they got off the
Internet)?

"And what National Secrets do 99% of home users have"
Typically none.
But then EFS is not available with Windows XP Home.
EFS is available with Windows XP Pro, designed with more security needs in
mind than the typical home user.

Sheesh - notice I didn't capitalize the "H" in home. I wasn't
referring to XP Home, I was referring to users AT home.
