Encrypted files

S

Samuelson

I've encountered a problem with some files I've encrypted
in the past. Here is my situation. I encrypted some files
on a spare drive I had on my computer a few months back
and I just recently upgraded my computer and installed a
fresh version of windows XP. After attaching that
separate drive with the encrypted files on it I lost
access to those encrypted files. What can I do to Un-
encrypt them or regain ownership of those files?
Thanks.

Are you sure it is not an Ownership issue:

If the files are encrypted.
If you did not back-up the encryption key or the Recovery Agent and
are not on a domain, the files are as good as gone.
This must be accomplished while you have access to the files.
If you have not already done so, it is now to late.

If you can restore the original profile (not recreate) you may be able
to recover the data.
Recreating profiles and passwords is irrelevant.
Contact Microsoft if you can restore the profile.

EFS is very good at what it does and there is no back door.
Read and understand these links before using EFS to keep from
permanently losing your data:

Hi,

These folders probably only grant access to your old
account. As an administrator, you can just take ownership
of the folders, modify the security descriptor to grant
yourself access, and then delete the folders.

To take ownership, go to the security properties of each
folder, click Advanced, and then go to the Owner tab to
modify ownership. You can then go back to the Permissions
tab to grant yourself the permissions needed to delete
the folder or do whatever you like.
