encoding .avi to .mpeg

Hi:

When I encode a video from .avi to .mpeg, the sound on
the .mpeg version runs for about 10 seconds, and then
stops.

This has happenned with a number of .mpegs that I have
encoded, even though the .avi files play correctly.

What am I doing wrong?

Hi Ken
Is this a standard AVI file or an AVI file using a codec like XVID or DIVX?
(you can see the codec in use by playing the file in Windows Media Player,
then going to file > properties).
Depending how long this video is the audio sampling rate might cause this if
it is not identical on the source and output file.
