For xp use. Start, run, regedit, HKEY-LOCAL-
MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Cdrom. Click
on autorun. The number(value) should be 1. Probably is 0.
Change to 1 and restart. I had the same problem and this
cured it.

You could try setting to 0 (zero), rebooting, setting to 1 (one), rebooting.

A value of 0xb5 in the following registry key turns off the AutoRun
feature for CDs:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer\NoDriveTypeAutoRun

You must set the hexadecimal value to 91 to enable the AutoRun
feature.

This will definetely fix this issue

unfortunately it doesn't work, i've tried that.

http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=817357

apparently they've acknowledged the problem and an immediate fix is
available at a price, otherwise i will have to wait for an update in a
service pack.

thanks for all your help anyway! Much appreciated! :)
