"Tom Willett" is totally incorrect when he talks about going to a different newsgroup
concerning the OP's particular email client.

Windows Xp's displaying email unread status messages on the Welcome Screen works for
most email clients that have been set as the default email client in XP.

To turn off the unread mail status messages, either :

1). Start Regedit.exe (by typing "regedit" into the "Run" box) and navigate to :

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\UnreadMail

....and change the setting immediately under this key called "MessageExpiryDays" to
"0" (Zero).

Do the same for the key :

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\UnreadMail

....again setting the value "MessageExpiryDays" to "0" (Zero).

This will ensure that unread mail messages are not displayed for all users.

Then the unread mail messages will no longer appear.

....or;

2). Download the [free] Microsoft program TweakUI.exe (for XP) and go to the
setting : "Logon" > "Unread Mail" and change how (or if) unread mail status
messages are displayed there.

Download the small TweakUI installation file from the link below :
