Emails sent and recieve take a long time. Why?

Why is it that in my Outlook 2000 at work I have problems getting and sending
emails. Sometimes it can take an hour or more for an email to be delivered or
received from the office next door. The emails may be anywhere from 1kb to
5mb. Doesn't seem to matter. Can anyone help?

Assuming at work you're not on a dial-up connection and instead are on some
kind of persistent (always-on) internet connection, usually the issue you
describe is caused by settings on the mail server itself.

By default, Outlook will perform a send/receive every 15-30 minutes (I think
the defaults are different in different versions) but your mail server may
only process mail in batches once per hour, for instance.
