Email templates using Contact Fields

I have bought Office 2003 SBE. I am aware I can create Outlook templates and store them as .oft files, but this only does half the job. I want to use email templates using fields from the Contacts (or Business Contacts) database. For example, I would like to insert first name and last name in the template and have this automatically inserted based upon the contact selected as recipient of the message.

Any basic contact manager (like ACT!) can do this, can Outlook? Or is there a way round it throught the use of Word 2003 without having all my emails stored as word docs?

The standard out-of-the-box method for doing this is a mail merge with Word with email messages as the output.
