Jack Reece

Im giving my Vista computer to my daughter.
I want to take all my current email and put it on my XPPro machine in
Outlook Express...
Short if sending each one to myself at the XP machine is there an easier
work around?

Thanks
Jack

I appreciate the response...but the ? mark at the end of your suggestion
leaves a wide open space...
Will or will it not work....I prefer something that will work..not a maybe
as your ? implies.
thanks for the reply.

I'm sure one of our OE-versed experts will be along shortly.
Let me just comment that exporting to CSV format applies to
contacts only, not email messages.

I meant ? to be a maybe, perhaps I was obtuse
Checking on my Vista sys I see msgs can only be exported to Outlook
(exchange) or Mail, niether of which OE can import (Outlook has to be
configured on the Mail PC in order to export)

As far as I see the only way is to create a windows Desktop Folder, select
all your msgs in Mail, drag them to this desktop folder.
Copy this folder to your other PC, open OE, open the folder, select all msgs
and drag to OE Inbox

1. Create a new desktop folder.

2. Open the folder and Windows Mail such that both are visible on your
screen.

3. Drag the messages (EML files) you want to transfer from Windows Mail to
the desktop folder.

4. Copy the desktop folder to, e.g., a USB key.

5. Copy the folder from the USB key to the desktop of the WinXP machine.

6. Open the folder, select all (CTRL+A), right-click on the group of EML
files & remove any Read Only attribute they may have.

7. Open the folder and OE such that both are visible on your screen.

8. Drag one or more of the EML files to any open OE folder. Do NOT place
them in your Inbox folder!

9. Compact all OE folders manually (cf.
http://www.insideoe.com/files/maintain.htm#compact).

General OE Caveats:

- Don't use Inbox or Sent Items to archive messages. Move them to local
folders created for this purpose.

- Empty Deleted Items folder daily.

- Frequently perform a manual compact of all OE folders while "working
offline". More at http://www.insideoe.com/files/maintain.htm

- Do not cancel Automatic Compacting, should it occur, and do not attempt to
close OE via Task Manager or shutdown your machine if Automatic Compacting
is taking place.

- Disable email scanning by your anti-virus application. It can cause
corruption (i.e., loss of messages) and provides no additional protection:

Alternatively my OEX program will let one import from a directory of eml
files into either OE or WinMail, so he can just copy his entire message
store over to the XP machine and either drag and drop the messages into OE,
or he can use OEX to get them back. www.oehelp.com/OEX/

Thanks Steve....
This sounds much easier ( a few clks vs lots of clks ) as PA Bear has
suggested..using a USB key (dont have..maybe to a CD will work).
But then again there is a cost issue. Since Im on fixed income.
It maybe a next month before I can budget for this route. And lots of clks
cost me nothing but my time..which hopefully god willing etc etc etc..
I will have lots of .........

BUT the fact still remains... That All of you have stepped up to the plate
and offered help and suggestions.
And I appreciate it very much. Since Im self taught and you all are good
teachers. THANKS!!!!

One extra note to Steve...I looked at your page for the OEX program...and I
will take your word for it but it doesn't say it will transfer
Windows mail to Outlook Express...since they are different file
names/extensions. Just making sure I understand the process.
Thanks again to all of you.

OEX was designed to work in both OE and WinMail and it will transfer
messages from one to the other.
