Email from Microsoft???

I just received an email from MS that started with:

"MS Customer

this is the latest version of security update, the "September 2003,
Cumulative Patch" update which eliminates all known security vulnerabilities
affecting MS Internet Explorer, MS Outlook and MS Outlook Express as well as
three newly discovered vulnerabilities. Install now to protect your computer
from these vulnerabilities, the most serious of which could allow an
attacker to run code on your computer". It has an attachment which makes me
nervous. I went to the Win Update site and no updates were posted for
download. Is this message legitimate? Thanks.

No, it is a virus attachment. MS does not send attachments.

Sorry. I should have stated OT. I unthinkingly posted here because this is
where I go most often for help. Thanks for responding.

I've received about 6 of them in the last day. Does MS have a place to send
these files so that they can do their voodoo, track these dogs down, and
chomp on their keesters?

[And I most certainly know better than to open the attachments. Mama didn't
raise no dumb daughters! ;-) ]

same here. tons of them. I'm only getting them on the email address I
_used_ to have attached to my posts.

I have to say to, all though this is not the place but I
can say that this is the place where it all started.

I didn't start getting those emails until I posted a
thread here, and it seems like if you open one they will
continue to send more. It's definelty a virus.

You may want to think about opening all messages with attachments. What
about deleting your Virus checker first than rebooting and opening those
attachments? If the Episcopal or Catholic priest asked you to go on an
overnight trip just to chaperone boyscouts would you believe them?

Sorry again. I didn't know this would cause such commotion. I just recently
put my email address on my site and started to receive spam. This, however,
was the first from MS with an attachment. I had heard MS didn't send
attachments. That's why I posted here-I figured I would get a quick
response.

no sorry should be given. we've all found out something and I personally am
glad you posted. now I know I was justified in my ham-handed attempt to
obfuscate my email address on these posts and I know it's been effecting
others as well. it kind of comes in waves, but it's usually the same MO.
there is no commotion. this is a good post. (IMHO)

I've received that message as well - several times over -
along with a lot of other Microsoft-based emails - all
with attachments.

I just deleted them all, didn't trust them at all
