ELUSIVE MACRO

S

Subligaria

Hi,

In a Word 2007 document, Word launches a Security Warning, telling me that
"Macros have been disabled". However, the Macros dialog box shows no macros
in the document.

I want to delete the rogue macro -- has anyone got any idea why it's hiding
and how to make it show itself?

Thanks.

If you disabled the macros, or selected nothing in Security Warning, then
the macro is being suppressed. Since it is suppressed, it won't be visible
in the Macros dialog box. It's also possible an empty module is present in
the document or the macros in the document are private to the module and
aren't visible in the dialog box. (There are other ways to suppress the view
of macros in the dialog box as well.)

If you want to remove the macro(s) then an easy way to do this is to save
the document as *.docx (macro-free) file. This will strip all macros from
the document.

Hi,

Saving my file as a .docx file does remove the macro -- thanks.

However, I need to retain my original file in .doc format. Is there any way
to get rid of the macro (a dialog when saving to .docx reveals it's a "VBA
project") and still keep the file as a Word 97 document?

Incidentally, in some other (related) files, Word 2007 reveals, in the bar
at the base of the screen, that it's attempting to contact a website.
Presunably this is a macro too?

Hi,

The .docx route works. However, I need to keep the document in its original
Word 97 format. Is there any way to delete the macro (a message while saving
to .docx reveals it's a "VBA Project") and retain my file as a .doc?

Incidentally, some other (related) files, when opened, produce a message at
the base of the screen saying that they're contacting a website. Is this a
macro? If so, it's not in the Macros dialog.

Thanks for your help.

You can save it in the *.docx format then save it back again in the Word
97-2003 format.

The message you are seeing in the status bar may or may not be related to a
macro. Do the documents contain links to other files?

Hi,

No, there are no links in the documents. They're trying to connect to the
site of the company that created the files. Not all the documents do this . .
..

Is there any way to manually force these clandestine macros to show
themselves within the original files? I just want to understand what it takes
to do this.

Thanks.

I doubt it's a macro attempting to make the connection. It could be the
document template. On the Developer tab, click Document Template and see if
the Document Template points to the company's site. If it does, delete the
content and Word will default to the Normal template.

If you do not see the Developer tab, click the Office Button, click Word
Options, and in the Popular sections select "Show Developer tab in the
Ribbon".

If that's not it then perhaps you can email me a sample file? It could be
any number of things causes this to occur. To obtain a valid email address
