El Torito CD doesn't boot

F

Hello Everyone.

I am trying to build an xpe run time el torito CD for almost a week but
it is giving the same error message given as
"lsass.exe system error. I/O operation initiated by registry failed
unrecoverably. the registry could not be read in, or write out, or
flush.............."
I have tried almost every procedure which I can find in the xpe
documentation. The first method described in xpe documentation which
creates an RAM based overlay doesn't work. Ok I have to create RAM REG
based overlay. The next time I've created RAM (REG) based overlay by
the procedure described by microsoft on msdn at

http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/d...lp/html/xegrfconfiguringewframregoverlays.asp

and after this run etprep /all and created the el-torito boot cd. I
also have tried the Slobodan Brcin procedure given at

http://groups.google.com/group/micr..._frm/thread/8a66ee9cd63d679b/4bb9658425996274

using his EWF RAM REG sp2 component, exactly followed the procedure but
it again doesn't work (though I was very hopeful this time). Everytime
I got the same error message and system rebooted. The most intersting
thing I have found in every build that there isn't any error in the
fbalog, everytime the el-torito cd is detected and ewf have properly
did it's work except the RAM REG mode there wasn't any entry about ewf
in the fbalog but that is expected. everytime pre fba image build is
fine no entry missing in registry no error by fbalog or ewfmgr,
everything they are saying is expected but than why it is not booting
from post fba image. Some facts I am mentioning here which could give a
little clue.

1: During XPE build boot the Windows XPE logo is of Win PE. There isn't
mentioned anywhere embedded on the logo, It just appeared once when I
tried my first RAM based overlay build.
2: As it is mentioned other than the Slobodan procedure to run
etprep.exe /all and it's expected behavior is it will shutdown the
system and the xpe current build will not be bootable anymore coz the
drives have been swapped. In my case this is not hapenning after etprep
the system is rebooting and xpe is running properly and ewf partition
is there nothing happened.

Here is my system configuration which i'm using to build the images.

1 HDD.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
| | | 15
GB NTFS D:\ | |
| C:\ 651 MB xpe | 4.24 GB Unallocated | Win PE
| 8 mb unalloc |
| A, Primary FAT32 | | Development
system | |
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
2: I have created one pre fba el-torito cd which i'm using everytime.
3: I am doing all this on VMWare, and I personally don't think there is
any problem due to VMWare.
4: I've used same configuration everytime but just changed the EWF
settings accordingly or other settings or just added or disabled the
corrosponding components and edited extra registries on the same
configuration.
5: No error in build, fbalog, ewfmgr no where.

---------------

Please any advice or any clue or any other way. Is there anything I'm
missing.

Regards

Farrukh

my hdd diagram is shuffeled. anyway my hdd is

C:\ 651 mb. fat 32. primary. active. bootable. (for xpe)
4.5 Gb unallocated space.
15 gb. D:\ ntfs. primary. winPE (development system)
8 mb unallocated space.

I recently have tried the procedure given at XPE Team blog given at

http://blogs.msdn.com/embedded/archive/2005/06/07/425939.aspx

But it is giving the same error message after i burned the post fba cd,
again no information is in the fbalog, or ewfmgr. everything goes well
but this time the ewf partition deleted properly when I run the etprep
/all and checked the fbalog from my development system. and after
burning the post fba image xpe is not booting properly from hdd. It
means etprep also gone well. But why again that error message. I also
have saved the fbalog which i'm attaching with it.

Hi Steve,

Thankyou for your reply, After many days atleast someone has replied.
Anyway I have read almost all of the NG messages but where many says
"Finally my system booted properly from CD" my system is still not
booting and giving me the same error message. I have changed my system
configuration now but still the error is there. Now I'm not using any
Virtual machine or SCSI drive. Here is my system configuration.

Primary Master. 1 HDD 80 GB which have 1 (c:\)651 MB FAT 32 Primary
Partition Active and rest of the space is unallocated. (For XPE)
Primary Slave. CD-R/W
Secondry Master. 1 HDD. 80 GB having two NTFS partitions. (For XPP
Development System) I am using TD on this system and building my system
in 651 MB partition of other HDD and when FBA runs I am disabling the
secondry IDE Channel just to allow CD-RW and my XPE HDD run.

Step by Step procedure to build image.
---------------------------------------------------------
1. Add the El Torito CD Support macro component (which will
automatically bring in all of the necessary components)
2. Resolve dependencies.
3. Configure EWF with the following settings:
Maximum Number of Protected Volumes = 1
Maximum Number of Overlay Levels = 1
EWF Partition Size in Kbytes = 0
Start EWF Enabled = FALSE (unchecked)
Enable Lazy Write = FALSE
Disk Number = 0
Partition Number = 1
Disk Type = IDE
Overlay Type = RAM
4 Build and deploy your image to the target machine.
5 Inserted Pre-FBA CD in the target machine.
6 Booted the machine to the runtime and allow it to run through FBA.
7 When ready, run "etprep -all".
8 When the system reboots, do not allow it to go back into the
runtime. Instead, boot to a safe build.
9. Create your final boot CD. You should be done at this point
---------------------------------
When I run etprep -all it has given me this message.
"EWF Partition Deleted Successfully = 1"
"Start value RedBook\IMAPI has been reset to zero"
(I think It did not swapped the lables)
But FBALOG says it has deleted and swapped everything properly. Given
is the concerned FBALOG.

I have rechecked my EWF and I'm 100% sure it is configured properly.
The above method I've outlined to build the image i've re-build my new
image the same way just this time I didn't run the etprep.exe -all
rather i performed these steps manually as given.
- EWF was disabled ( checked by ewfmgr c: )
- I deleted the EWF partition by ( etprep -delete ) and it said
"Deleted EWF Partition = 1"
- Rebooted the system and this time EWF was configured to RAM (REG)
mode and it was enabled. I disabled it by "ewfmgr c: -commitanddisable"
and reboot the system.
- I ensure there wasn't any EWF partition.
- I swap the drive letters by "etprep -flip" the system rebooted after
flipping drive letters and I log on to my Safe build (XPP). I have
loaded the System Hives from XP Pro and checked the registry entries at
HKLM\System\MountedDevices and the DosDevice\C has value 'ELTO" (it
means it switched properly). I've deleted all other keys except this
one. (with reference to this message
http://groups.google.com/group/micr...as+been+reset+to+zero&rnum=1#9124a98132df6aba)

- I build the Post-FBA image from this and burn it on the CD but still
the samer error by "LSASS.exe System Failure......"
!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
-----------------------
To recheck I logged in to my HDD XPE in which drives has been swapped
though It is not supposed to log in but It did and I checked the EWF
status it was enabled..
-----------------------
I don't think there is any clue to this problem atleast to the best of
my knowledge and understanding & now it seems to me a bug !! because I
can't see anything going wrong at any place. Though I might be wrong so
any of you have any idea about this than plz help me cause i'm running
out of time and it is making me frustated now.

Thank you for your patience.

Hi Farrukh Arshad,

you have simply no Arcpath, because your Bios does not transmit this
information via ntdetect.com. There are two possible solutions:
Modify your driver disk.sys (very hard job) or
use the modified ntdetect.com, I posted here in the forum (search for
Dietmar)

www.talkaboutsoftware.com/group/microsoft.public.windowsxp.embedded

That works, because I succeed in building DVDs, CDs even a try for real XP
on a lot of total different compis with this ntdetect.com.

Good luck

Hi Dietmar,

Thanks for your reply. I've tried the cracked version of NTDETECT but
it still don't seems to work. I've copied the HexText and created a
file named NTDETECT.COM. One thing you've said it will be a file of
nearly 47 Kb but the file created from that HexText which you've posted
is at about 92 Kbytes though Start and End strings are same as you've
mentioned which are Start = 6655668BEC & End = 1A992E99. So what I'm
doing wrong. Can you send me your copy of NTDETECT.COM at
[farrukh(dot)arshad(at)gmail(dot)com]. Or is there any other solution,
I've seen somewhere on this NG 'syslinux' to boot from CD. Can I use
this in my scenario if I can use this, can you give me a starting point
to do that.

Thanks.

One more thing if it is(not the cracked NTDETECT.COM) due to hardware
compatibility then it should work on some other system and i've tried
it on 4 different systems which are Dell Dimension 2400, Dimension
4550, HP & Toshiba (I don't know exactly their models). !!!

SteveS

farrukh,

Keep trying! it will come. I personally have not tried to make an El
Torito CD, but I have also been in this position of not getting an
answer from the newsgroup, and it's frustrating, so I wanted to offer
anything I could...

<Blasphemy>Have you considered a support phone call to Microsoft?
Their guys seem to have a somewhat sporadic presence in this newsgroup
(Last post by Andy Allred was May 3rd), but if you can pony up a few
$$ for a suport call, I bet they could resolve it for you immediately.
</Blasphemy> I would be interested in hearing your experience (or
anyone elses) if you pursue this.

Regarding the hextext, when you copy it, you need to take paste it into
an editor that understands hexadecimal. I suspect currently you are
pasting it as text.... This would double the size (2text digits = 1
byte of hex data). I believe I used a program called Hexedit from
www.catch22.uk.net to do this.

Finally, I reread your first post, and the part about a WinPE logo
seems suspicious to me... I have never seen a WinPE logo except when
booting off of the XP installation CD.

Dietmar,

Thanks for the NTDETECT, I got it but I am getting the same error
message with the cracked NTDETECT.

And Steve I will definately keep trying though I'm getting more n more
frustated day by day and definately let you know what solves my problem
& I think it's better to call MS Support. This WinPE Logo problem is
still suspecious to me I don't know why it is like this. When I
installed first time XPE SP1 and build an image it was that time I saw
Win XPE Logo but when i upgraded to XPE SP2 I never saw that XPE Logo
again. I don't know why !
Is there any way I can see what's happening when I'm booting from
Post-FBA CD. I think /debug parameter in boot.ini should work! or any
other suggestion.
Well let me try debug switch.

Special thanks to all those who are replying here,

Hi Farrukh Arshad,

is your CD Rom drive and your harddisk on the same IDE controller?

This is a must be.

I spend 14 days and nights to get it work.
But at last it works on all compis.

Hi Dietmar,

Exactly they are on same IDE Channel. my HDD is on Primary Master and
CD-Rom is on Primary Slave and my XP Pro drive is on Secondary Master
which I used to turn off while booting XPE. One thing I wanted to know,
What is the recommended File system for XPE. I have tried only FAT32
yet. I just changed NTFS and when I burned Post FBA CD i got the BSOD
UNMOUNTABLE_BOOT_VOLUME, STOP: 0XED Error. It seems due to corrupted
NTFS partition. Is file system a problem in my case. I think I should
try on FAT16 partition.

Hi Farrukh Arshad,

I never used NTFS.
As far as I can remember, I always used Fat 16.

I rembered, that there was a discussion in the newsgroups, whether Fat32
or NTFS is possible at all. The last statement was,
that it might work, but I never heard about anyone, that he succeeded with
a different filesystem than Fat 16.

Fat16 works for Windows Embedded only, with the
NTLDR bootsector. Partition Magic gives you a MSDOS bootsector, which not
works. So you have to format your partition from an outstanding XP for Fat
16.

Good luck

PS: At the moment I have only little time.
In about one week I can send you a short Tutorial,
how I succeed. It differs in some points from the version from Microsoft.

Hello,

Finally I got it working after 19 days. I tried it using FAT16 but it
didn't worked. Then I changed my XPE HDD partition size from 651 MB to
502 MB and make changes in the configuration accordingly and burn a new
Pre-FBA CD and let the FBA run from XPE HDD and followed the El-Torito
CD making procedure and finally It worked. But I am confused about one
thing here, Earlier I have created Pre-FBA CD of exactly 651 MB size,
have an XPE partition of 651 MB and have set 651 MB size in the
configuration size and I'm burning my both CDs (Pre & Post) FBA on
700 MB disk then why this is happening! If this is the case then what
is the maximum allowable size for El-Torito CD, I mean if I create a
disk with 550 or 600 MB then would it work! I can't find any reason
for this error and what if I wanted to create a DVD. Anyway I'll find
the reason and let you know here.

I have little experiance exploring the Linux source code for embedded
purposes and during all this while creating the El-Torito CD I was
wandering if I can get the source I could exactly track the problem
location, thats why open source is better for embedded purposes
specially but obviously Windows has its advantages which I needed!! and
this El-Torito CD method is not implemented nicely in XPE.

Anyway thank you very much to all of you who replied here, Your
messages were new hopes for me to keep continue.....

Regards
Farrukh Arshad.

Hi Farrukh Arshad,
I build DVDs with a size of 2 GByte with Fat16
on the harddisk. So, your size limit must have another reason. Slobodan
has put an own Tutorial
here, how to build a CD (DVD).
This works and you can put 2 partitions on your
DVD.

Nice to hear from you
Dietmar

PS: I remembered, that there is a bug in TD about
the size of an image and that I have one time a
problem with this bug.
