EFS Certificate and NTFS Encryption

Richard

Hi Folks,

What is the purpose of the EFS certificates and NTFS file encryption?

If I encrypt my NTFS formatted partition using the Microsoft embedded
encryption option, what purpose does the EFS certificate serve?

If this certificate is deleted/wiped, does this make the files inaccessible?

Would I lose access to all my data?

Thanks in advance.

Hi,

Before you start messing with encryption, you need to understand how it
works and what you will need to recover encrypted data. I would suggest you
start by working with some non-essential data files to get a handle on it.

The certs tell the computer that you are you and are allowed to
decrypt the files.

Without the certs, your data is as good as gone. There is no backdoor.
