XP Pro SP2.

Originally on my machine I had two text "handlers." NotePad, a bare
minimum text editor and another one more powerful (but not really a word
processor) that dealt with .doc files (at least to some extent), but I
can't remember the name of it. I think both of these came with XP.

After temporarily installing Open Office 2.1 I found the second one had
been deleted. The Open Office uninstall did not reset what had been
there.

I can't find anything like it in Windows Components or Add Software or in
my archive of stuff I installed myself.

Anybody have a clue what I'm talking about and how to get it back?

It sounds like you're talking about WordPad, which is sort of a subset
of Word and a reasonable app for most beginners not needing all the
bells & whistles. It's part of XP.

I seriously doubt the installation of OOo had anything to do with your
"loss" of Wordpad. Perhaps all you've lost is a shortcut that went to
it or something similar. You should be able to start it from Start;
Programs; Accessories; and then click on wordpad.
If that doesn't work then use win Explorer to look in
C:\Program Files\Windows NT\Accessories\ for wordpad.exe.
It should be there. Then you can either recreate a shortcut or whatever
else you wish to do.

Try making a new shortcut on the desktop and type in wordpad.exe.
If the file is there you will have the short cut.
If not you could try restoring from you Win CD.

Hmm, that's strange. Do you know how to turn on viewing of hidden and
system files? That could be why you can't see it, since it's a system
file of XP. If not, it can be explained here.

Someone suggested manually creating a shortcut to it, probably with the
assumption that the file is actually there. Do you know how to do that?
It's not as simple as using "wordpad.exe" in the shortcut though. If
not, that could be explained here too.

Target:
"C:\Program Files\Windows NT\Accessories\wordpad.exe"
Check to be sure those exact folders exist; if not, modify accordingly.

Startin:
%HOMEDRIVE%%HOMEPATH%

Shortcut key:
None

If you already know how to do the above and have tried them without
success, do you know how to do an XP Repair install? That can also be
explained here. Even though a Repair Install won't delete your data,
BACK UP ANYWAY! Just in case. Since Wordpad went away mysteriously,
there's no telling what else might be corrupted, so don't take chances.
Back up all your important data, IE Favorites and your e-mail address
book and mail boxes.

Yes. I turned on hidden and system files immediately when I installed XP.

I found wordpad.exe in a backup folder of some sort. (I've never quite
understood the nature of such folders.) I copied it to the program
files\windows NT\accessories folder that was mentioned. But it doesn't
show up through Start\Programs, altho its back on the "Open With" pick
list now.
Target:
"C:\Program Files\Windows NT\Accessories\wordpad.exe"

I'm not sure what is supposed to be in that accessories folder. It was
there but totally empty.

No, I have no clue how to do a repair installation. I haven't even
figured out how to reinstall a single item from CD. It is an IBM CD set
with 8 discs and each one looks exactly alike in a folder view. I'm
guessing it needs some sort of utility to use them but have no clue what.
20 years ago I could eventually figure out some of this stuff if I read
enough, but my short term memory is too darn short (half a page or less)
for systems stuff now.

I'm in a sort of bad position right now. My only backups are in the
Restore system and I've had that whole system fail before. I had Acronis,
but found it much too complicated to actually use when I had a loss.
(Besides the fact that the only way to delete old files was to delete
everything and start Acronis from scratch.) I've heard Casper is good.

I had a look at the Windows Backup wizard. That #&^%&(*$@#%^&*&^ thing
wants to use a FLOPPY startup disc. Geez! (What I wish I had is a second
system on my USB external. That's where Acronis put stuff, but...)

Thanks.

Hm. That's a new one on me.

Gets me a "Windows cannot find" error.

There's no "write.exe" anywhere on C:\.

What about Start, Run, c:\windows\system32\write.exe

Write.exe was a Win95 program. When Win98 was released, it had a
write.exe stub which ran Wordpad.exe
XP has the same old stub for compatibility as Write.exe only runs
Wordpad.exe

That would be a really neat trick, given write.exe does not exist on this
computer according to a full drive search - as I already said.

Apologies. You need to look at Google's cache to see the answer:

http://209.85.215.104/search?q=cach...experts-exchange.com&hl=en&ct=clnk&cd=1&gl=us

(or http://tinyurl.com/6p83fh )

"Accepted Solution":

1. Go to the Control Panel and open Add/Remove Programs

2. Click the Windows Setup tab, enter the Accessories folder

3. Clear the checkboxes next to Wordpad and Paint, and click OK. If
Wordpad is not checked, that is fine. Continue with step 4 below.

4. Click Start->Run and type REGEDIT. Click OK. Backup your registry
first.

5. Browse to the key
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Current
Version\Applets\Wordpad and delete it

6. Close Regedit and restart your machine

7. Open Add/Remove Programs again, and re-check the boxes next to
Wordpad and Paint. Click OK (Your Windows CD will be required)

Another comment:

To show wordpad under Add/Remove programs/Windows Setup/Accessories

Edit the SYSOC.INF file (%systemroot%\INF) and delete the word HIDE
(just those four letters) in the line:

MSWordPad=ocgen.dll,OcEntry,wordpad.inf,HIDE,7

Save the file

Thanks. I needed that. It makes me curious why - and why all that stuff
disappeared in the first place.

So are you able to run Wordpad now?

Yup. It magically appeared after I got it put back on the components list
(delete HIDE) and activated. With MAJOR help of course.

Thanks much. It isn't often I get a 1, 2, 3 instructions list.
