Hmm, that's strange. Do you know how to turn on viewing of hidden and
system files? That could be why you can't see it, since it's a system
file of XP. If not, it can be explained here.
Yes. I turned on hidden and system files immediately when I installed XP.
Someone suggested manually creating a shortcut to it, probably with the
assumption that the file is actually there. Do you know how to do that?
It's not as simple as using "wordpad.exe" in the shortcut though. If
not, that could be explained here too.
I found wordpad.exe in a backup folder of some sort. (I've never quite
understood the nature of such folders.) I copied it to the program
files\windows NT\accessories folder that was mentioned. But it doesn't
show up through Start\Programs, altho its back on the "Open With" pick
list now.
Target:
"C:\Program Files\Windows NT\Accessories\wordpad.exe"
Check to be sure those exact folders exist; if not, modify accordingly.
I'm not sure what is supposed to be in that accessories folder. It was
there but totally empty.
Startin:
%HOMEDRIVE%%HOMEPATH%
Shortcut key:
None
If you already know how to do the above and have tried them without
success, do you know how to do an XP Repair install? That can also be
explained here. Even though a Repair Install won't delete your data,
BACK UP ANYWAY! Just in case. Since Wordpad went away mysteriously,
there's no telling what else might be corrupted, so don't take chances.
Back up all your important data, IE Favorites and your e-mail address
book and mail boxes.

No, I have no clue how to do a repair installation. I haven't even
figured out how to reinstall a single item from CD. It is an IBM CD set
with 8 discs and each one looks exactly alike in a folder view. I'm
guessing it needs some sort of utility to use them but have no clue what.
20 years ago I could eventually figure out some of this stuff if I read
enough, but my short term memory is too darn short (half a page or less)
for systems stuff now.
I'm in a sort of bad position right now. My only backups are in the
Restore system and I've had that whole system fail before. I had Acronis,
but found it much too complicated to actually use when I had a loss.
(Besides the fact that the only way to delete old files was to delete
everything and start Acronis from scratch.) I've heard Casper is good.
I had a look at the Windows Backup wizard. That #&^%&(*$@#%^&*&^ thing
wants to use a FLOPPY startup disc. Geez! (What I wish I had is a second
system on my USB external. That's where Acronis put stuff, but...)
Thanks.
